Several ammo manufacturers now offer sub-sonic ammo for use with an AR-15 chambered for .300 Whisper and equipped with a suppressor. Subsonic ammo also is available for suppressor-equipped tactical rifles chambered in .308 Winchester.

Designed for stealth and concealment, the McMillan ALIAS CS5 is a compact precision tactical rifle. Configured with a suppressor, the CS5 can be purchased under NFA regulations by submitting an ATF Form 4 and paying the $200 transfer tax.

Fair Chase Does Not Apply

The exploding population of feral hogs is becoming an agricultural disaster of epic proportions, so many states have relaxed their hunting regulations (at least concerning feral hogs) to give hunters some leverage in controlling hog populations. Nowhere is this more true than in Texas where night hunting for hogs with night vision- and suppressor-equipped firearms is perfectly legal. Even shooting hogs from a helicopter has the blessing of Texas authorities.

With a Texas hog-hunting expedition in my immediate future, I will probably pass up helicopter sniping, but I have assembled a few toys and accoutrements to facilitate the operation.

Hog Medicine Numero Uno

At the top of my list is an SSK Industries .300 Whisper AR-15 upper with an SSK screw-on silencer. This is mated to an Aero Precision lower receiver that I bought as a stripped lower receiver. I assembled it using a Brownell’s lower receiver parts kit and assembly tools.

The SSK upper receiver has a 16-inch stainless steel barrel with a 1-in-7.5-inch twist to stabilize the heaviest bullets in subsonic loads. A unique feature is the SSK’s adjustable gas block that ensures 100 percent reliability with supersonic as well as subsonic loads. A coin-slotted switch on top of the tubular forend has an “H” and an “L” setting. Turning the switch so the “L” faces the shooter, sets the gas block to feed subsonic ammo perfectly. Supersonic ammo will function properly on the “L” setting, but will place unnecessary stress on the action. In the “H” position, supersonic loads function perfectly, but subsonic loads will not cycle the action.
